When an individual passes away while in receipt of a social welfare payment, the payment in question will usually continue to be paid to the deceased's surviving next of kin/carer/partner for six weeks after date of death (if a named dependent). In the circumstance of a carer's allowance, the payment will usually continue for an extra 12 weeks. For more information, please contact your local welfare officer.
In order to apply for this grant, an individual must be in receipt of a social welfare payment. The funeral grant is means tested and at the discretion of the community welfare officer, with an application form obtainable in the local community welfare office. The invoice for the funeral must be in the name of the grant applicant, with all relevant and applicable details provided. If issued, a check will then be made payable directly to the undertaker/funeral director.
The Widowed or Surviving Civil Partner Grant is a single payment to civil partners, widows and widowers with children who are dependent. The current rate for the grant is €6,000.00.
