Egans Undertakers Athlone was established in 1954 by its founder James (Jimmy) Egan and his wife Sheila (pictured above). Jimmy was originally from Creevagh Clonmacnoise, Co.Offaly, and Sheila from Ballinasloe, Co.Galway. Both were known throughout Athlone for their kindness and generosity, and to this day are still fondly remembered by many for it. Jimmy and Sheila were always hard working, with Jimmy also operating a wholesalers and hackney service (often for free!) and Sheila running a prominent hairdressing salon in the town. They also proudly raised three boys, Frank (who sadly passed away at the early age of 51 in Perth Australia 2005), Michael and Padraic. Jimmy then went on to establish Egans Coaches, a well-known and well-revered business in Athlone town which is still successfully operated by their son Padraic.
On the 5th of November 1980, Egans Undertakers suffered the untimely loss of Jimmy. Jimmy's death was greatly mourned as he was loved by many. At 20 years of age, Padraic became Egans Undertakers new proprietor and second generation to operate the business. Padraic continued in his fathers footsteps, alongside his mother Sheila, keeping alive the business his parents had built from scratch. Sadly, in 2000, the Egan family suffered the devastating loss of Sheila who, alongside with Jimmy, will always be greatly missed and loved. Following this, Padraic and his wife Laura continued to manage and run the family business.
David and Tom, the third generation of Egans, have taken on the role of funeral directors in the business. Padraic, Laura, David and Tom now ensure the legacy of Jimmy and Sheila live on, through providing the same personal, caring and quality service which Egans Undertakers has been built on.
